Eurocup 2015/2016 - English version

16.09.2013

Welcome to the EWE Baskets Oldenburg!

EWE Baskets Oldenburg makes its third straight Eurocup appearance this season after narrowly missing the Last 32 a year ago. Oldenburg entered its regular season finale needing a victory and come assistance in other games to advance; though it took care of business, it didn’t get the help it needed and bowed out after 10 Eurocup games. Nevertheless, Oldenburg finished the season strong. After a midseason coaching change put Mladen Drijencic in charge, Oldenburg edged Brose Baskets Bamberg to win the German Cup for the first time in club history. The team also reached the German League playoffs before bowing out in the quarterfinals.

Basketball has been in the northwestern German town of Oldenburg since the Oldenburger Turnerbund athletics club opened its basketball section in 1954. It reached the top league in Germany in 1966, and was in and out of the top flight for the next three decades. Oldenburg waited until the turn of the millennium to establish itself as a legitimate force. The club got to the German playoff quarterfinals each season from 2003 until 2006, before jumping over the quarterfinal hurdle in 2008. It all clicked a year later, as Oldenburg edged Telekom Bonn in the final seconds of the last game of the finals on a Je'Kel Foster free throw to win its first German championship and book a ticket to the 2009-10 Euroleague. Oldenburg won its first-ever Euroleague game on the road against Prokom in Poland, but that proved to be its only triumph, too.

The club debuted in the Eurocup in 2010-11, and after a couple of quieter domestic campaigns, it was back at its best in 2012-13 season – taking third place in the FIBA EuroChallenge, then reaching the German League finals before losing to Brose Baskets Bamberg. Its return to the Eurocup in 2013-14 saw Oldenburg come within 1.6 seconds of a place in the Last 32, but Bilbao Basket ended its campaign in the regular season. Oldenburg also reached the German League semifinals before falling to eventual champion Bayern Munich in the maximum five games. Oldenburg enters a new season energized with a title in its back pocket and the desire to collect more. In 2014-15 the win of the German Cup “Beko BBL TOP FOUR 2015” in the final against Brose Baskets was the seasons highlight.
